Receeding glaciers formed the northern dam to a great lake in the trench they had created; the Puget Sound. Countless rivers draining seasonal snowmelt from surrounding mountains left sedimentary deposits hundreds of feet thick. These form a finely laminated wall rising high overhead from the beach as it exists today. Epic stories are written in the sand where children play.
